In choosing the right size solar and battery system for your home, you need to take into account your energy usage, budget and motivation for going solar.
Your energy usage will determine the minimum sized solar and battery system that will cover your needs, while your budget will determine whether you could go a bit bigger. After all the bigger the system you get, the bigger the savings you’ll see on your bill down the track.
The third factor is your solar motivation – why are you getting solar? Many people don’t realise that this is also an important factor in designing the right solar and battery system for your home.
For example, when it comes to our solar and battery package, we’d recommend a 5.3kW solar system with a 4.8kWh battery for a mid-sized four person household that is focused solely on maximising their financial return.
This is because maximising your solar capacity (without going overboard and blowing the budget) will bring significant savings, especially if you’ll be using a high proportion of your solar power in your home. Furthermore, a smaller battery will be sufficient if your priority is financial return rather than self-sufficiency and extended blackout protection.
However if that same household was instead focused on maximising their energy independence, we’d recommend a 5.3kW solar system with a 7 or 11.8kWh battery. With the bigger battery they’ll be able to store more solar power, therefore exporting less to the energy grid and buying less electricity from their power company.
