Your questions answered: Changes to your rates

Q: Why should I stay with DC Power Co?

We launched our electricity offer to the public earlier this year and we love that you made the switch to DC Power Co as one of our first customers. We’re taking on a big challenge – building a business in a highly regulated, complex market – and we really appreciate your support.

Our goal is to help you get the full value from your solar, or make getting it easy. As the only power company dedicated to solar households, this is our unique and unwavering promise to you and it’s why we offer our customers a suite of services designed for solar households.

Each customer we bring on board helps us improve our services and prices, and as one of our first we hope you’ll continue this journey with us.

Q: What is the suite of services that you offer?

We can only offer these to customers with smart meters, which is why we want to get you one installed for free*.

If addition to these services, we are also able to support you in making your solar and storage decisions. If you’d like solar panels or a battery, check out our free solar quoting tool.

* The smart meter installation will be free for all standard meter installations. However, if a non-standard meter installation is required, DC Power Co will levy a fee of no more than $100 to cover the cost of the installation. Examples of non-standard meter installations could include where minor asbestos removal, fuse replacements and link installations are needed.

Q: Why have you increased your rates? Does that mean you’re changing the price I pay for electricity?

We’ve changed our market offer to reflect the changes in the price of wholesale energy, network and other costs for electricity.

While we don’t like doing this, fluctuation in the electricity market means our rates will increase to reflect this. We don’t benefit from this change and because we are small our ability to absorb these costs is limited. As we bring more customers on board we will be able to better navigate these wholesale and network price increases in the electricity market.

Q: How do I know what my rates are?

You can check your exact rates by logging into your DC Power Co account.

Q: What is GreenPower?

GreenPower is renewable energy purchased by your power company on your behalf.

When you buy power from the electricity grid, it all comes from the same central pool – the National Electricity Market (NEM). The electricity in the NEM comes from a range of sources, both renewable and (largely) non-renewable, and no matter which power company you’re with, it’s not possible to control which electrons are delivered to your home.

So when you buy GreenPower, we’ll buy electricity that’s generated from accredited renewable energy generators on your behalf and feed it into the National Electricity Grid. This clean energy doesn’t feed directly into your power supply, but is added to the electricity grid on your behalf through Large-scale generation Certificates (LGCs) that we’ll purchase from the power station.

The more GreenPower that’s sold, the more renewable energy will be generated to match demand.

Q: I thought I was already purchasing GreenPower from you?

All power purchased through DC Power Co is 100% carbon offset. No matter which power company you buy your electricity from, it all comes from the same central pool – the National Electricity Market. We can’t control which electrons are delivered to your home, so we’ve chosen to offset 100% of the carbon emissions associated with our customers’ power and gas use. This means that all of the power and gas used by our customers has been completely offset.

However, GreenPower goes one step further and specifically supports the generation of electricity from renewables. It is actively supporting clean energy generation, and intentionally choosing to not support coal generated energy.

Q: What is the difference between GreenPower and carbon offset?

When you buy GreenPower, we’ll buy electricity that’s generated from accredited renewable energy generators on your behalf and feed it into the National Electricity Grid. This clean energy doesn’t feed directly into your power supply, but is added to the electricity grid on your behalf through Large-scale generation Certificates (LGCs) that we’ll purchase from the power station.

Carbon offset energy is carbon neutral and means that is does not directly support clean energy generated from renewables.

Q: What is a smart meter and why should I want one?

Smart meters differ from current ‘basic’ meters by being able to measure consumption accurately across very small time periods (down to half hours) in the one meter. They also have two-way communication abilities to enable remote meter reading, and to enable instructions to be sent to the meter, for example to remotely disconnect a property (although this functionality is not yet active).

This means that you’ll be able to look at the DC Power Co app and see how much electricity you use from the grid and how much solar energy you export, down to half hour intervals. In addition, it means no more estimated bills, and you’ll receive your solar feed-in credits every month.

Plus, we’ll be able to monitor your solar exports which means, if your solar system stops exporting electricity to the grid, we’ll alert you via our Solar Alert just in case there’s something wrong.

Q: Smart meter installation – whats the process?

Just give us a call on 1800 686 686 and let us know you’d like a smart meter. From there, we can sort it out for you.
